Since the late 1980s, photographic portraiture has been at the core of Albrecht Fuchs’ (*1964, GER) work. During and shortly after his studies at Gesamthochschule Essen in Germany, his photographic approach was guided by street photography and a more photojournalistic style. However, a longer stay in New York and his encounter with photographer Evelyn Hofer encouraged him to focus particularly on artist portraits. His first photographs in this genre featured fellow students and professors within the scholar environment. Over the decades, Albrecht Fuchs has photographed a wide array of internationally renowned personalities from the art and culture scene, some of them multiple times and at considerable intervals.
What distinguishes Albrecht Fuchs’s artist portraits is a high degree of individuality, a certain naturalness and ease that rarely evoke a sense of staging. Nonetheless, it is undoubtedly essential to align the framework of the session between photographer and “model.” Fuchs emphasizes that he always responds to the situation at hand during an agreed meeting. Sometimes the time available for a photograph is brief, while at other times there is more opportunity for interaction. Many portraits are taken in the living spaces or studios of the artists, providing insights into their respective living and working environments and, indirectly, into their artistic practices.
Albrecht Fuchs’ works have been on view in multiple institutions in Germany and Europe in solo and group exhibitions, p.e. at SK Stiftung Cologne, GER (2024); Museum für Photographie Braunschweig, GER (2024, solo in 2020); Leopold Hoesch Museum, Düren, GER (solo in 2021); Kunsthaus Nürnberg, GER (solo in 2021); Galerie Elisabeth & Klaus Thoman, Innsbruck, AT (solo in 2021); Galerie Nagel Draxler, Berlin, GER; Neuer Aachener Kunstverein, GER; Kunstraum Düsseldorf, GER; Bundeskunsthalle Bonn, GER.
