Sign painters are also painters: Wohnseifer’s script-based paintings feature individual names, words, or text fragments from different contexts. Hand-applied with stencils on canvas, wood, or aluminum, they are presented in the typography of their respective source or in Helvetica Neue. Through various painterly and drawing techniques – often in the form of wordplay – the mere reproduction of the text is disrupted, elevating it from its purely semantic meaning.
