Splint Model - PETER SANDBICHLER
exhibited:
05.12.25-28.02.26 PETER SANDBICHLER, objective correlative, Galerie Elisabeth & Klaus Thoman, Vienna, AT

Veneer wood, cross-laminated and pressed under high pressure into plywood, is particularly known through Charles & Ray Eames. They used the material not only for furniture but also to solve a specific design problem for the U.S. Navy: splints to stabilize leg injuries during World War II.

Peter Sandbichler is interested in wood, craftsmanship, and artistic form-making. Inspired by the “Molded Leg Splints,” he strips the historical object of its original function and transforms it into an autonomous wall piece.
The enlargement alters the bodily relation, allowing materiality and details to be perceived anew.

While industrial plywood objects prioritize efficiency, Sandbichler focuses on artistic exuberance, the playful combination of materials, and the creative process of shaping forms.
