The starting point for the four-part work “Koordinaten” lies in the images and atmospheres that the word “Mulde” (depression, hollow) evokes in me. A “Mulde” is a soft indentation, a perceptible recess, a notch, an inward movement, a descent, a negative space – the interior of the mouth where language becomes body, the vault of the back of the skull, darkness. I shaped hollows in wax into the palms of my hands. They are hand-sized, Maria-scale. They were cast in bronze using the lost-wax method, blackened with acid and fire, and coated with a thin layer of wax. In the exhibition space, the objects are embedded in the wall, leaving only the openings visible. The wall replaces the negative space of my hand. The openings are arranged in relation to my body: starting at the center of the forehead, then clockwise, reaching upward with the right hand, then down to the navel, and finally, with the left hand at chest height, pressing thumb to index or middle finger. Visitors are invited to repeat this gesture, placing their hands in the hollows and feeling the surfaces with their fingers. Over time, the black patina will wear off at the points of contact.
The work “Koordinaten” can serve as a manual or guide to the exhibition. (Maria VMier)
