Michael Kienzer’s aim is to create tensions and relationships between the individual works. The site of the multi-part series “Falter” (“Moth”), which stretches along the fortification wall of the castle grounds, is carefully considered, defined and metamorphosed. The objects, which correspond with the niches in the wall, create rhythm and density, while the colour chord that Kienzer has developed for the individual wall surfaces reinforces the idea of abstraction within individual sections of the space.
Like most of his installations in public spaces, they are produced in situ, which means they are created specifically for this particular location or context. He positioned the “moths” in a similar way in the Jardin des Tuileries in Paris, for example, by lining them up along the park walkways and resuming the rhythm of the baroque sculptures. In the castle grounds in Linz, it is primarily the niches in the fortification wall that dictate the rhythm. Through the positioning of Kienzer’s sculptures, the wall structure attracts fresh attention and stimulates a change in our perception. Kienzer speaks of “the overlooked that is made visible.” Taking the space as a starting point, a reference can also be made to historical, functional, socio-political and architectural paradigms.
