Dementia-Paintings evolved as a continuation of the Screen-Series. These works have a hybrid character, combining the analog activity of painting with digital images generated through a subtractive production process. The screen, phone, computer, and television, as “windows to the world,” already seem to be a form of confinement, and cognitive deterioration due to excessive screen time is a common effect. To delve deeper into this concept, signs and symptoms of dementia, such as memory loss, confusion, repeated actions, wandering, or impulsive behavior, have been translated into a painterly practice. Attempting to transfer these symptoms, which have catastrophic and brutal consequences for sufferers and their families, into the field of painting has transformed them and made them more bearable, at least on a theoretical level.
