Outside, twelve pieces
Opening: Jun 29, 2025
• Schlossmuseum Linz, AT
The Michael Kienzer exhibition in the outdoor area of the Schlossmuseum Linz offers insight into the multifaceted oeuvre of the Austrian artist through twelve works. Kienzer, known for his exploration of space, architecture, and sculpture, presents both current works and a retrospective cross-section of his artistic development.
Kienzer’s works do not simply fit into the space, but rather create a symbiotic relationship with the environment. In his work, the exterior space becomes an active component of the art. For example, by adding, leaning, and supporting his objects, the existing architecture becomes part of the art production. For Kienzer, these are sculptural gestures that dissolve the traditional conception of sculpture and redefine space.
Kienzer is not only concerned with the formal exploration of materials, but also with reflecting on their functions and characteristics. The exhibition invites us to question and reinterpret conventional ways of looking at things.
His works are artistic interventions that interact with the site. The artist’s aim is to impart a thematic and formal structure to the exhibition and the space that extends across the grounds of the Palace Museum. The space itself thus becomes a sculpture that unfolds anew.
Michael Kienzer was born in 1962 in Steyr and lives and works in Vienna.
