Johannes Wohnseifer (*1967 in Cologne) creates artworks in an associative interplay of material, format and content. Their smooth and glossy aesthetics echo those of the advertising industry and challenge its propagandistic impetus. His aim is to lay bare the core of a brand image with its myths and stereotypes. Often, in his video works, photographs, sculptures, and installations, he employs the same means of staging as those used in marketing. He contrasts these adaptations with a rupture in tiny details that reduce the core, the brand, the company, the celebrity, to a shell and make it appear as a reproducible surface.
Johannes Wohnseifer lives in Cologne and has been appointed professor of painting and sculpture at the Academy of Media Arts Cologne in 2007.
