Biography

Julia Bornefeld, born 1963 in Kiel, lives and works in Berlin (GER) and Bruneck (IT). She studied painting at the University of Applied Sciences for Design in Kiel (1984–1989) and completed a guest course at the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Venezia with Emilio Vedova (1986–1987) and at the Akademija Likovna Umjetnost, Ljubljana. 
Bornefeld works in different media (painting, sculpture, photography, performance) with the stylistic means of irony, exaggeration, alienation and identification.
With her objects, always in the balance of large volume with simultaneous weightlessness, Bornefeld repeatedly implements installations in public space, including: 2023 setire, Ferdinandeum Innsbruck exterior façade; 2018, fontana rossa, Bolzano, IT; 2010, body knots, Franzensfeste, IT; 2007, windhosen, Husum, GER.
International exhibition participations and solo exhibitions since the 1990s, including 2023 Wellcome Collection London, 2020 Museion Bozen, 2017 Kunstverein Augsburg (solo), 2014 ZKM Karlsruhe (solo), 2011 Tiroler Landesmuseum Ferdinandeum (solo).
