Since the beginning of the year 2009, Herbert Brandl has worked almost exclusively on the monotypes that are now subject of his solo exhibition at the Vienna Albertina. The artist takes a particular interest in the process of how these originals come about. In contrast to painting on canvas, the monotype passes through several states that the artist assesses and pursues or else discards. Brandl paints on acrylic glass – initally, and with most of the originals, measuring 60 x 90 cm – from which the painting subsequently is transferred, in the course of individual printing processes, onto heavy laid paper, in this case 60 x 90 cm. Over time he has varied the formats to arrive at monotypes up to 122 x 158 cm in size. Each monotype is a one-off and has been valued at 4,400 euros.

To go with the exhibition at the Albertina, a catalogue book is published with 300 coloured illustrations of the monotypes and texts by Christoph Ransmayr, Florian Steininger, Antonia Hoerschelmann, and a preface by Klaus Albrecht Schröder. Each of the 30 copies contains a signed monotype, measuring 29 x 23 cm, and comes at a subscription price of 500 euros.
