Born in 1929 in Baden, lives and works in Vienna, Upper Austria, Bavaria and Teneriffa. Arnulf Rainer is the
founder of Art Informel in Austria. He is especially known for his ‘overpaintings’,
an idea and technique he started in the 1950s. From 1981 until 1995 he teached at Akademie der bildenden Künste, Vienna. Rainer’s committed search for new approaches to painting and his constant
development of painterly strategies is accompanied by performative works and
extensive writing.
